Christian Louboutin vintage: archive models and how to recognize them

The red sole was born in 1992, a year after the opening of the first boutique in Galerie Véro-Dodat. Thirty-four years later, almost all of the house's famous models—Pigalle, Kate, So Kate—date from after 2004: at Louboutin, icons are not yet vintage, and we say "archive model" rather than using the word out of sync. The house itself never says "vintage": it says "the essentials."

Recognizing and dating a pair of Christian Louboutin

• Louboutin does not publish any dating system: no serial code, no season code, no marking grid. What circulates about the stamps comes from commercial guides that copy each other, and at least one of them is false – the mention "Vero Cuoio" does not mean "before 2007".
• The only reliable anchors are chronological: red sole from 1992, Pigalle in 2004, Kate in 2012, So Kate in 2013.
• The rest can be read in the silhouette: heel height, depth of the vamp, presence or absence of a visible platform.

What to look for before buying

• A worn red sole is not a defect — the house says so, without changing a word since 2012: "the red lacquer wears off with use, it is not a manufacturing defect, it is normal wear and tear".
• We protect the sole with a thin sole protector, and here's the important point: a cobbler who sands the sole before applying the sole protector destroys the color. We do not sand. Transparent adhesive films, on the other hand, tear off the lacquer when removed: we never use them.
• Once the lacquer is gone, it does not return to its original state: the sole protector stops the degradation, it does not recreate the original lacquered finish.
• On 120 mm heels, the heel tip is systematically replaced, and we check the heel's attachment on older pairs.
• Missing studs are replaced, provided the correct generation can be found.

What makes a pair valuable

• A named and dated model — a Pigalle stands clearly above an anonymous pump.
• The condition of the red sole, and clearly stating what has been redone.
• The material: exotic leathers and rare finishes above smooth leather.
• A common size, the original box and dust bags — the market explicitly values them.
