Do Balenciaga shoes run small or large?

Balenciaga labels its products "FR/EUR 37 – US 7": French, European, and engraved sizes are one and the same number, without conversion. A particularity of the house, it only manufactures full sizes. The fit is read by family: Knife pumps are snug but very narrow at the toe, while chunky-soled sneakers, Triple S and Track, run a size large — go down one size, or even more if your foot is slender.

Balenciaga does not publish foot length; useful reference: a size 37 corresponds to a foot of approximately 24 cm. Balenciaga confirms it in its own guide: this size is also the French size, with no discrepancy.

Balenciaga vintage: archive models and how to recognize them

Balenciaga has two lives, and the word "vintage" covers both – that's the trap with this house. Cristóbal Balenciaga's historic house, closed in 1968, did not produce ready-to-wear shoes. What is collected today are the shoes from Nicolas Ghesquière, 1997-2012: full-grain leathers, sculpted wooden, resin, and bolted block heels. These are also, by far, the ones that age the best.

Balenciaga archive models

  • Strappy sandals with buckles on a wooden heel 2003 discontinued

multiple straps fastened with silver metal buckles, on a chunky stacked wooden heel

  • Lego heel 2007 discontinued

multi-coloured lacquered blocks bolted together, stacked like bricks

  • Sculpted heel pumps 2010 discontinued

wood, resin and metal combined, geometric block heel

  • Triple S 2017 still in production

a triple stacked sole, and a deliberately worn and yellowed look from new

  • Knife 2017 still in production

pointed blade-like toe, very elongated, very thin stiletto heel

Recognizing and dating a pair of Balenciaga

  • The best house identifier is its logo. In autumn 2017, Balenciaga abandoned its old logotype for a bold, compressed sans-serif font, designed after the Parisian metro signage. Compressed logo: after 2017. Old thin and spaced logotype: before.
  • The style code grows with time, which allows two pairs to be classified relative to each other — this is an empirical rule, the house does not publish any grid.
  • "Made in Italy" is not an identifier here: it has been an invariant since the 2000s.

What to look for before buying

  • The soles of 2016-2018 sneakers hydrolyze: they crumble and yellow even without having been worn. This is the number one risk for a pair left in its box, and there is no viable repair—we refuse such pairs.
  • On the Triple S, wear is part of the design—the shoe is meant to look already worn. Consequently: it's impossible to distinguish the intended patina from actual wear, and this should be known before purchasing.
  • One-piece molded foam mules are neither disassemblable nor resoleable.
  • Full-grain leathers from the 2000s are the brand's best-aging: conditioning and resoling are sufficient. This is the legitimate argument for vintage archives against recent sneakers.

What makes a pair valuable

  • A piece from the Ghesquière era, the house's collection period.
  • An intact sculpted heel — wood, resin or lacquered blocks.
  • A non-hydrolyzed sole, checked and advertised.
  • A common size, and the original box.

The luxury house Balenciaga was founded in 1917. Known for its bold shapes and even architectural constructions in its fashion creations, it has always maintained this spirit and a keen sense of particular cut throughout the decades. It has always oscillated between innovation, provocation, and very high-end luxury in the world of haute couture.

Brand creation

According to the Kering group, Demna Gvasalia (the Georgian designer) had transformed Balenciaga with a "street / post-irony" aesthetic, oversized silhouettes, diverted objects, and a mix of luxury and "ugly aesthetic" since 2015. In July 2025, we are witnessing a transition as Pierpaolo Piccioli, the new artistic director, will likely bring his couture sensibility and softer elegance, while retaining the strong codes of the house.
