Alexander McQueen size guide: which size should you choose?

  • Size Italian (IT) the number indicated on our product sheets
  • Fit True to size, narrow toe take your usual size
  • Half sizes Yes, from 34 to 42 Alexander McQueen official women's range

Do Alexander McQueen shoes run small or large?

Alexander McQueen publishes a size chart in Italian sizes, without a French column: the engraved number reads as is. The length is accurate, the fit is narrow — this is the note the brand has its retailers repeat for the Oversized Sneaker: "fits narrow, take half a size up if you're unsure." The leather softens after one to two weeks; on the Oversized, the stiff tongue rubs the ankle for the first few days.

Our advice by model

  • = / +½ Oversized Sneaker — snug but narrow: +½ if you're unsure or have wide feet official sizing note relayed by retailers
  • = Tread Slick (boots, Chelsea) — true to size retailers
  • = Pumps and sandals (Koko, Niko) — true to size retailers
  • ± High and biker boots — mixed reviews, rather large wearers

Alexander McQueen vintage: archive models and how to recognize them

The Alexander McQueen archive, in the collectors' sense, is Lee McQueen himself, from 1992 to 2010 — a period celebrated by two museum retrospectives. One figure to understand this market: a pair of Armadillo shoes sold for £60,000 at auction, while runway pumps from the same hand, seven years older, fetched £364. It's not age that determines the price, it's the documented iconic model.

  • Sarah Burton2010-2023

Alexander McQueen archive models

  • Armadillo 2010 never mass-produced, twenty-four pairs

a boot sculpted from a single curved mass in the shape of a claw, with no visible heel, on a hand-carved wooden platform

  • Butterfly Pumps 2003 runway piece

real taxidermied butterflies encased in a transparent resin wedge heel

  • Arc 2022 discontinued

an inverted arch heel: the curve is concave under the arch — the only sculpted heel from the house to have an official name

  • Oversized Sneaker mid-2010s still in production

minimal leather upper on an oversized rubber sole, contrasting heel counter

Recognizing and dating a pair of Alexander McQueen

  • Only one marking reference is attested by a leading source: the mention "Made in Italy Vero cuoio" embossed on the arch of the outsole.
  • The product code grows over time, which allows two pairs to be classified in relation to each other — but this is a deduction, never a firm dating, as the house does not publish any grid.
  • The material dates nothing at McQueen: museums describe the Armadillo sometimes in stingray, sometimes in snakeskin, sometimes in wood and python — three executions of the same model.
  • On boxes, labels and interior markings, nothing is reliably documented, at this house as elsewhere. We prefer to say so, and describe to you what we observe on the pair you are looking at.

What to look for before buying

  • Archival heels are made of rigid, non-reproducible materials — inclusion resin, carved wood, hand-painted horn. A chip, crack, or paint wear is definitive: no cobbler can recreate this. This is the number one deal-breaker for a piece from this house.
  • Missing studs can be replaced, but it's a replacement, not an identical restoration, and we note it on the product sheet.
  • We carefully clean the insole: the embossed logo can fade, and this marking is precisely what identifies the pair.
  • Patent leather is the least valued by the market, which is consistent with its fragility.

What makes a pair valuable

  • An iconic, documented model — this is the overwhelming factor for this house.
  • An identifiable runway piece, with its season.
  • An intact sculpted heel, with no chips or paint touch-ups.
  • A common size, and the original box.

The haute couture house Alexander McQueen was founded by the British designer of the same name, known for his extravagant and sometimes provocative works of art in the field of fashion. This luxury house has kept the designer's codes after his death in 2010. Shocking details and fashion shows that are almost artistic performances rather than simple collection presentations are still found.

Brand creation

Alexander McQueen came from a working-class background in London and began his career at a very young age as an apprentice tailor, then another, gradually leading him to enter the prestigious St Martins school in London. Key highlights of his notoriety include his appointment as Artistic Director at Givenchy following John Galliano, and his collaborations with artists such as David Bowie, Céline Dion, and Lady Gaga, who dedicated her song "Telephone" to him. He also designed Kate Winslet's wedding dress in 1999.
