Do Valentino shoes run small or large?

Valentino runs small by about half a size, and the Rockstud — half of the catalog — does not stretch: the studs stiffen the leather. If in doubt, take the next size up. The toe is narrow on pumps and slingbacks. Wearers also report irregularities between two pairs of the same model: this is the brand in the catalog where trying them on matters most.

Valentino archive models: the house icons and how to date them

At Valentino, the shoe icon is recent: the Rockstud dates back to 2010, it will only be twenty years old in 2030. In other words, what is sold everywhere under the label "Valentino vintage" is actually recent pre-owned—and we prefer to state it. The house has an immense couture heritage, but its shoe heritage is short, concentrated, and it fits into one grammar: that of the stud.

  • Valentino Garavaniuntil 2008
  • Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creators of the Rockstud2008-2016
  • Pierpaolo Piccioli2016-2024

Valentino archive models

  • Rockstud 2010 still produced

pyramidal studs aligned along the edges — ankle strap, vamp outline — and a very pointed toe

  • Roman Stud 2021 still produced

the same pyramidal stud, but massive and enlarged, placed on a full surface rather than an edge

  • One Stud 2021 still produced

a single, very large stud, placed in the center

  • Tan-Go still produced

platform pump with block heel, buckled ankle strap

Recognizing and dating a pair of Valentino

  • The stud acts as a clock, and it's the most reliable indicator for the house: small pyramidal studs on the edge refer to 2010 at the earliest; a large stud on a solid surface, to late 2020; an oversized single stud, to 2021.
  • "Valentino Garavani" on the first is not an indication of age — it's the name under which the house signs its accessories today. Many sellers present it as a vintage marking: this is incorrect.
  • "RED Valentino" on the other hand is a clear interval: this diffusion line existed from 2003 to 2022.
  • "Made in Italy" has no discriminating value here, and the house marks in European sizes.

What to look for before buying

  • Studs are the wear part of the model, to the point that there are specialized workshops for their replacement. They are crimped, not screwed. We replace them when we find the right generation: on an ankle strap, all studs are in the field of vision, a mismatched stud is immediately noticeable.
  • Their finish dulls and pits; re-polishing an already set stud attacks the plating, we prefer to replace.
  • The leather of thin straps stretches and buckle holes become oval: re-stitching and additional holes are a common practice.
  • Cracked patent leather, however, is definitive.
  • A word to reassure you: the golden logo printed under the sole disappears with the first steps. This is not a defect, and we do not count it as such.

What makes a pair valuable

  • Stud integrity: a single missing stud can shift a pair from one condition to another.
  • Color – the house's red and nude tones dominate the market.
  • An identifiable model from the stud grammar.
  • A common size, and the original box.
