Gucci vintage: archive models and how to recognize them

At Gucci, it all started with a horsebit laid flat on a loafer in 1953. The other great period, and by far the most sought-after, is that of Tom Ford, 1994-2004. A useful clarification: Gucci reconditions and resells its own past — bags, scarves, clothing — but not its shoes. We have checked: the brand's archive boutique has never offered footwear. This is exactly the work we do.

Recognizing and dating a pair of Gucci

The number found inside is not a date code: these are a style number and a supplier code, and two different items can bear the same. At Gucci, dating is done by the brand's labeling and by the shape.
« Made in Italy by Gucci » refers to the 1950s to 1970s; « Gucci — Made in Italy » to the 1970s; the same accompanied by the crest and a serial number, to the 1980s.
Honesty: this chronology is documented on bags and clothing, never explicitly on shoes. It gives a decade range, not a specific date.
« Gucci Accessory Collection » is an authentic but distinct diffusion line, produced from 1979 to the late 1990s. « Gucci Plus », Paolo Gucci's line, is not Gucci.

What to look for before buying

The horsebit loses its plating at friction points and becomes pitted. We repolish it; a complete re-plating is a separate craft, rarely justified, and a deeply pitted horsebit will be noted.
The leather sole of moccasins can be resoled without reservation: this is the core of our expertise.
The coated GG canvas cracks and splits at the folds: the coating is a PVC layer, it cannot be nourished or recolored. Cracks visible on the vamp are disqualifying.
The bamboo heel of Tom Ford-era pairs splits as it dries: this is structural, and we cannot repair it.
The fur of the Princetown felts and yellows; it can be replaced, at a cost that must be weighed against the price of the pair.

What makes a pair valuable

An attribution to Tom Ford with an identified season: this is the dominant factor for this house.
The horsebit — a model without a recognizable house sign significantly depreciates.
Exotic leathers.
A healthy original sole, or a clean and assumed resole.
A common size, the original box and dust bag.
