Recognizing and dating a pair of Prada

Prada does not publish any readable date codes: the small numbered labels are production labels, with variable formats, and a number found online does not establish a year.
The stamp helps: the mention MILANO is a marker of age — "PRADA / MILANO" or "PRADA / MILANO / MADE IN ITALY" on older pieces, versus "PRADA / MADE IN ITALY" today. Honest disclaimer: this is documented on bags, we verify it pair by pair.
In practice, we date by silhouette: square or very round toe and flared heel for 1996-1999; technical sole and red stripe for 1999-2001; figurative lacquered sculpted heel for 2008-2012; one-piece lug sole and enameled triangle for 2019 and beyond.
"Car Shoe" is a distinct brand of the Prada group, not a Prada model.

What to look for before buying

Sole hydrolysis is the number one risk with Prada. Air humidity penetrates the polyurethane, breaking the polymer bonds, and the sole eventually crumbles. Two counter-intuitive consequences: a never-worn pair can be destroyed, and prolonged storage is worse than wear. We systematically scratch the sole before purchasing; if it's powdery, we refuse the pair. If healthy, a structural resole makes the shoe better than new, as the upper is almost always intact.
A chipped enameled triangle cannot be replaced outside the brand's network, and it is the visual signature of the model.
The lacquered heels of the Fairy and Flame models blister and peel; retouching a hand-painted heel remains visible, and we disclose this.
The brushed leather of the Monolith, however, can be very well renovated: it is a good candidate for refurbishment.
