Louis Vuitton archive models: the house icons and how to date them

One fact to know above all else: Louis Vuitton has only been making women's shoes since 1998. The house is a trunk maker; shoes were introduced with the arrival of Marc Jacobs. A "1980s Louis Vuitton ballet flat" does not exist, and 99% of what is read under the "Louis Vuitton vintage" label actually refers to bags and trunks. For this house, the correct term is archive: signature, identifiable models that have entered the permanent catalog.

Recognizing and dating a pair of Louis Vuitton

• The date code stamped inside — two workshop letters and four digits — indicates the month of manufacture until 2006, then the week from 2007 to 2021. On a shoe, it is hidden under the lining, on the insole or on a tongue sewn into the quarter, and never in the same place from one model to another.
• Since March 2021, Louis Vuitton no longer includes any date code: an electronic chip replaces it, readable only in store. A consequence to remember: a pair without a code is not "old", it can be four years old.
• Some finishing benchmarks: the LV circle on the tongue and sole refers to the Archlight family, thus 2018 and later; a sole with rubber studs, to driving moccasins.

What to look for before buying

• Coated monogram canvas is a PVC-coated textile: it cannot be nourished or recolored, and it cracks at flex points — instep crease, vamp circumference. A crack opens a little more with each wear: we reject such pairs.
• Patent leather cracks like an accordion and transfers its color.
• Rubber and foam soles — wave sole, lug sole — harden and yellow during storage; a detached sole can be re-glued, but a hardened sole cannot be replaced.
• The Blake-stitched construction of the LV Oxford can be resoled cleanly: it is the house's model most compatible with refurbishment.
• The rubber nubs on driving moccasins tear off one by one; we can add a full sole, but this changes the original appearance, and we state this.

What makes a pair valuable

• A named and recognizable model rather than an anonymous pump.
• The visible monogram, which clearly stands out above the equivalent plain leather.
• A canvas without cracks and a sound sole.
• A common size, the box, dust bags, and spare laces.
