Do Chanel shoes run small or large?

Chanel does not publish a size guide: the house does not sell its shoes online. The consensus among resellers and wearers is clear—Chanel shoes run small by about half a size, and narrow at the toe, with real variations from one season to another and sometimes between two pairs of the same model (due to hand finishing). Lambskin stretches by half a size with wear, while patent leather and grosgrain never do. Good to know: the letter engraved after the size indicates width, with B for standard and C for wide.

Our advice by model

  • Two-tone Slingbacks — do not stretch, and if too large, they slip off the heel resellers and wearers
  • Two-tone Ballerinas — up to +1 in quilted, patent, or denim; tweed, however, runs large resellers
  • +½ / +1 Turnlock Loafers — the most variable in the catalog, depending on the season wearers
  • Pointed-toe Pumps — round toe, however, is true to size wearers
  • Espadrilles — whole sizes only, and they stretch a lot wearers
  • = Ankle boots and combat boots — true to size; tall boots require an extra half size wearers
  • −½ Dad sandals — run large resellers

Chanel vintage: archive models and how to recognize them

At Chanel, the icon is not a model name, it's a geometry: the beige body and black toe, designed in 1957 with Parisian shoemaker Raymond Massaro. The house does not name its shoes — it has types: slingback, ballet flat, espadrille, boot. Beware of pages that sell you a "Cambon model": that's a line of bags. And a pair is only vintage beyond twenty years, meaning 2006 and earlier: most of what circulates under this word comes from the Karl Lagerfeld years, not Gabrielle Chanel.

  • Gabrielle Chanel1954-1971
  • Karl Lagerfeld1983-2019
  • The 1990s, the most sought-after

Chanel archive models

  • Two-tone Slingback 1957 still produced

beige body, contrasting black toe, elasticated back strap, low heel

  • Two-tone Ballerina 1980s still produced

flat beige ballerina, rounded black toe, small bow

  • CC Pump 1990s discontinued

square or pointed toe, CC as a plaque, strap jewel or topstitched; satin, velvet, suede or caviar leather

  • CC Espadrille 2013 still produced

rope sole, contrasting toe, interlocking CCs on the vamp

  • Two-tone Boots and Over-the-knee Boots discontinued

the 1957 geometry transposed to the boot: plain shaft, contrasting black toe

Recognizing and dating a pair of Chanel

  • On the insole: CHANEL, with the CC logo below and the country above. The marking is hot-stamped or blind-debossed—even with significant wear, a pair will retain its trace.
  • On the sole: the CC logo, the mention Made in, and the size directly below. Italy in the vast majority of cases, France occasionally, Spain for espadrilles—this is therefore not a cause for concern.
  • There is no authenticity card for Chanel shoes, unlike bags, and no serial number dates them. Numbered stickers, holograms, and the 2021 chip are for leather goods: do not look for them on a shoe.
  • What truly dates a pair is its shape: square toe and prominent metal CC plaque for the 1980s-1990s, almond toe for the 1957 line and its re-editions.

What to look for before buying

  • The black grosgrain toe is the brand's weak point — ironically, it was designed to hide scuffs. It frays, unravels at the edge, and stains easily. We replace it; however, a grosgrain that is stained over its entire surface or has turned brown can no longer be re-dyed.
  • The elastic strap of the slingback loses its tension within one to two decades: on a pair from the 1990s, it is often stretched out. We replace it, and we state this rather than hiding it.
  • Lambskin marks at the slightest friction, and metallic lambskin cracks: on the latter, the heat from resoling damages the film, so we avoid it.
  • Hardware that has lost its plating can be redone.

What makes a pair valuable

  • The two-tone: a beige pair with a black toe clearly stands out above an equivalent monochrome, it's the recognizable code of the house.
  • The visible CC — the most sought-after 1990s pairs are those where it is embossed on the caviar leather or topstitched on the velvet.
  • The material: caviar leather and velvet above satin.
  • The condition of the toe, which in the eyes of the buyer determines the condition of the entire shoe.
  • A common size, and the original box.
